Max Nordile 'Hanging By A Fan Over Wet Cement' LP (GGGR-137) OUT NOW!
Hanging by a Fan Over Wet Cement is the music of listening after listening, when water runs relative to the sound of your own footsteps, and you lean over the resonating chamber of a trashcan like it’s a campfire, then fill it with wheezy laughter. Only, the steel mesh of Hair Clinic/Max Nordile’s field microphone is all mangled and bludgeoned, and the field extends into his home garage. The same contact-foraging quality of attention goes into the beginner’s brain improvisations, whether on saxophone or skipping stones. And the mixing and editing is in large part a visual process, with Nordile monitoring slips of time and intention for the contours of song. It’s a prickly and startling listen, influenced by sound art, alive with noise. Nordile, a member of Debt Rag and Shelter Music, among other groups in Olympia, WA, traces the album’s inspiration back to the duet of birdsong and idling garbage truck, and named it for the language artifact of a dream. The cover shows degraded spiral forms in Scottish petroglyphs. Hanging by a Fan Over Wet Cement is creative, personal music to mirror the distorted balance of consensus reality. -Sam Lefebvre Digital / streaming: direct from the artist: Available to order now! Mia Loucks 'Sisko Sisko Demos' LP (GGGR-135) OUT NOW!

Despite now having a handful of releases in her discography (dating back to 2015’s Sister Honey Demos – released on cassette by Related Records and again on LP via Gilgongo in 2016), Mia remains an enigmatic presence, a bedroom artist for the bedroom listener (you have not seen her on tour, nor as an opener in her home town). However, the playfulness and lighthearted feel to her approach is misleading – Mia is an authentic and dedicated artist whose work is in fact a product of intention. Gilgongo Records is honored to release another collection of her incredible songs. Edition of 200 copies, released January 2024. Available to order now! Mailorder:

Group Material 'Intimations' LP (GGGR-136) OUT NOW!
Blending guitar, piano, synthesizer and field recordings, Group Material craft an ambient sound that simultaneously captures both intentional and incidental settings, an ambient informed musique concrete. On Intimations, Eric Sanchez and Avalon Kalin offer a series of 4 pieces which would feel as at home on Kranky circa 1999 as they would on any modern tape label in 2023 (as they originally did, via cassette on Slurred Oath). RIYL: Roy Montgomery, Windy & Carl, Brian Eno, Emeralds. Limited edition of 100 copies. Digital / streaming: direct from the artist:

Soft Shoulder 'It's All A Small World After' LP (GGGR-126) OUT NOW!
Intended to sync up with a return to all of our our normal routines, It's All A Small World After resists the temptation to step away from remarking on the mundane (accidentally collecting cardboard, cutting your hand on plastic, the dog's favorite toys, avoiding potential muggings, keeping the floor clean and the 7th and 8th editions of the groups "Repeat" tracks). Recorded alongside March 2023's Smile Building's Exit, the genres again are simultaneously vague yet synonymous with the group, but with influences that can be easy to pin when the right listener puts the record on. This is where the write-up tries to not reference specific groups (The Fall? Scissor Girls? etc), and instead says the LP pays homage to a hypothetical cross-pollination of the entire Fast Product catalog. Written and recorded by James Fella in late 2021, mastered by John Dieterich.

Cheryl E. Leonard & Wobbly 'Multiple Park' LP (GGGR-123)
Cheryl E. Leonard builds and plays electroacoustic instruments made out of natural materials such as bones, driftwood, shells, seaweed, feathers, and stones. Jon Leidecker (aka 'Wobbly') responds to the sounds of her creations with synthesized animal voices driven by machine listening. The inaugural collaboration of these two veterans of the San Francisco Bay Area electronic music scene can be heard on the album Multiple Park, a collection of works assembled from both studio and outdoor performances, radio broadcasts and field recordings, as well as outright hallucinations — an album which evokes an abstract yet literal world that exists in the space between city life and utter wilderness. Material for the album’s centerpiece was recorded in three California parks, ranging from deeply urban to abandoned to entirely wild. The result is one “Multiple Park,” filled with noises simultaneously abstract yet bound to the physical events that generated them. Riding a line between a secret history of electronic music that aspires to birdsong, and those dedicated to the preservation of vanishing biophonies, Multiple Park is a visceral meditation on the sounds of “the outdoors,” and how those sounds are changed and framed by our technologically accelerating lives. Cheryl E. Leonard has been composing and improvising with materials from the natural world since the late 1990s. Her performance and recorded history includes many collaborations - notably with Euphotic (Tom Djll & Bryan Day), Thomas Carnacki, Big City Orchestra, and Phillip Greenlief. Jon Leidecker has been creating experimental work since 1987: both solo and in collaboration (People Like Us, Matmos), as a member of Negativland since 2011, a current producer of Over The Edge on KPFA, as well as contributing electronics to the current incarnation of the Thurston Moore Group. James Fella & Gabriella Isaac 'Performances' LP (GGGR-125)
A follow-up to the duo's LP, CCTK Music (2021, Gilgongo Records), Performances features three sets from Fella and Isaac, from Gilgongo Records' 15th Year Anniversary celebration in Phoenix, AZ -- December 2019. Like the event, the record starts with a recreation of the second side of CCTK Music, using six reference lacquers of CCTK's A-side as source material to make a live collage. Following this are solo sets from Isaac (using her laptop as a feedback loop/sound source/physical device) and Fella (offering a slow-moving electro-acoustic/tape-machine based piece). Includes a sketched layout for the CCTK installation and a reproduction of the event's flier. Recorded and mastered by John Wiese. Available to order now! Mailorder:

Soft Shoulder 'Smile Building's Exit' LP (GGGR-124)

Recorded in late 2020 but catching an extreme pressing plant bottleneck, the new LP from Soft Shoulder could appropriately be subtitled: “More Songs About Nothing Much, Some Entropy Implied”. A document of a slow-moving human experience (being unable to retrieve packages from your post office’s parcel locker, other occupants of the building your studio is in screaming wildly in the hallway while you try to record, vague homage to public-access television, a “how to” in changing your password, ETC) housed inside a dilapidated, but smiling, building and channeled through an amalgamation of sporadic picks from the record collection of James Fella (e.g. / in the key of F: The Fall, Fire Engines, The Futurians, Frumpies). Mastered by John Dieterich, back cover art by Eric Sanchez. Available to order now! Mailorder:

Lana Del Rabies 'Strega Beata' 2LP / CD (GGGR-128)
Set for release March 17th, 2023, on 2XLP/CD/Digital through Gilgongo Records, ‘STREGA BEATA’ is the 3rd fulllength album from Sam An’s dark electronic, genre-bridging solo project under the semi-notorious moniker Lana Del Rabies. After a brief hiatus, this record is her first full-length release since the gothic, industrial noise of 2018's Shadow World. ‘STREGA BEATA’, which loosely translates to "Blessed Witch," is an apocalyptic myth told through dense, textural compositions pulling from the vast corners of dark genre music. The title's meaning is appropriate for the existential, cathartic, and otherworldly themes explored.

The record is told through the evolving perspective of a cryptic and obscure "Mother" creator figure, specifically echoing the mother and crone goddess archetypes. This figure is vocalized through LDR's eerie harmonies, spoken words, pleading howls, and frenetic screams aimed towards another archetype, the chosen one. These vocalizations sometimes hover above trip-hop low tempos and unnerving atmospheres ("Mourning," "Hallowed is the Earth"), sink through vintage horror movie darkwave synths ("Master," "Apocalypse Fatigue"), weave through art metal distortions and relentless drone bass tones (Mother), or blast through unconventional industrial rhythms ("Prayers of Consequence," "A Plague").

Lana Del Rabies is the solo dark electronic, genre-bridging solo project of Phoenix based musician, producer and multimedia artist Sam An. With origins as an experimental project that re-contextualized the more ominous aspects of modern pop music made by women (like that of Lana Del Rey), Lana Del Rabies’ music incorporates industrial, gothic noise and metal, with experimental, darkwave and ambient elements. Her work thematically embodies discordant spaces between the occult and the political, personal trauma and collective grief, and brutality and benediction. Available to order now! Mailorder:

Wasteland Jazz Ensemble 's/t' 2LP (GGGR-118)
WASTELAND JAZZ ENSEMBLE is a staple in the world of destroyed music. With countless releases cataloged by a literal who's who in the field, (cassettes, CDrs and records on American Tapes, Troniks, New Forces, Oxen, Torn Light, Nashazphone and of course—there was a split 7" w/ Tiger Hatchery on Gilgongo), the duo of JON LORENZ and JOHN RICH occasionally expand their scathing, feedback-saturated reed work into a full ensemble. Here, as a 7 piece group including DYLAN POSA (guitar), EDWARD RICART (bass), MATTHEW REIS (electronics), RYAN JEWELL (percussion), and BRET NAGAFUCHI (percussion), there are textures and fractured forms throughout this high-volume chaos which calls to mind the work of Hijokaidan, as broadcast through Borbetomagus. A heavy and delightfully excruciating listen! 2xLP, gatefold with extensive liner notes by INZANE JOHNNY. Available to order now! Mailorder:

Various Artists 'The Blorp Esette Gazette Volumes Three & Four' 2CD (GGGR-129)
The history of the Blorp Esette, which chronicles the output of the Los Angeles Free Music Society and other entities in its orbit, dates back to 1977, with the release of Blorp Esette Volume One LP (soon to be reissued by Superior Viaduct) and Volume 2 2LP in 1980. Volumes 3 and 4 emerged in 1999, packaged in a boxset with the previous volumes. The Blorp Esette Gazette first appeared with Volume 1 & 2 in 2013. Intended to be an on-going series, it was paused after the passing of Transparency label owner Michael Sheppard who was co-releasing the CDs w/ LAFMS members. While the original Esette is an obligatory who's-who of LAFMS (Doo-Dooettes, Smegma, Le Forte Four), the Gazettes have an even more sprawling reach. Compiled by Ace Farren Ford and Ju Suk Reet Meate, Volumes 3&4 features: Michael Uhlenkott, {AN} EeL, Ace & Duce, Control Unit, Sissy Spacek, Kommissar Hjuler und Frau Mama Baer, Million Brazillians, Lee Rockey, Trance Farmers, Keith Mitchell, Split Second, Mr. Foon, Electric Bill Robinson, Testing Vault, Donkey Flybye, James Dewey, Eric Zann, Threed, Purple Panther Ensemble, Lynn Carey, Collide Burger with Chicken Larry and Patrick Lubow, Dr. Amazon, Io, GX Jupitter-Larsen & Ace Farren Ford, Dan and Letha Rodman Melchoir, Harold Schroeder, Erica Rawlings. Art direction by John Wiese & Ace Farren Ford, with collages from Cody Brant featured throughout the release. Each "issue" of the Gazette features a visual artist (Vol. 1 was Ace Farren Ford, Vol. 2 was Rick Potts). Available to order now! Mailorder:

An entropic vortex of full-room tear-up texture. Duo lineup of Charlie Mumma and John Wiese. Here's what's (slowly) on the way... meaning, at the plant now with timelines that are loose at best. :
Wasteland Jazz Ensemble s/t 2xLP
Soft Shoulder 'Smile Building's Exit' LP
Plumbing 'Sourced Material' 8" lathe
Cheryl E. Leonard & Wobbly 'Multiple Park' LP
James Fella & Gabriella Isaac 'Performances' LP
Soft Shoulder 'It's All A Small World After' LP

There will be a series of short-run releases from Soft Shoulder that will essentially be "singles" from another new LP.

And there are a handful of releases on deck that will be getting sent off as some of these long-awaited titles being to materialize.

Making records in 2021/2022 has been extremely frustrating, but there's not much that anyone can do about it right now. Regardless, excited about what Gilgongo has to offer for the rest of this year, and the next - even if it is a slow moving process right now.

James Fella & Gabriella Isaac 'CCTK Music' LP (GGGR-122)
CCTK Music combines Gabriella Isaac's exploitative use of laptop as feedback loop / sound source / physical device and James Fella's electro-acoustic / tape as instrument approach. The duo incorporates each other's material in real time (on Side A), cutting the content onto 6 singles-sided reference lacquers. The lacquers were used to assemble a collage in a performance setting in late 2019, and again in a studio setting for Side B. The result is a record that is both scathing but at times harmonious, scattered, and dense but with enough air for the individual contributions to still have room to breathe. Mastered by John Wiese.Available now: (see:
Gilgongo Records online shop, Discogs)

Mitchell Keaney 'Head, Gut, Heart' LP (GGGR-109)
At long last! The debut LP from Mitchell Keaney (currently found in Berlin). On Head, Gut, Heart, his debut LP via Gilgongo Records, Mitchell Keaney offers three long-form pieces built around a rational, emotional and instinctual body. Using Óscar Ichazo’s theory of “Trialectical Logic” as a launching point, Mitchell plays with the affect of mechanistic and repetitive thinking to interrogate different listening states within one’s body. Here, Mitchell is in no rush to move from one state to the next and chooses to play with slowly evolving rhythmic patterns to invite (and at times demand) the listener to sit and stay for a while. Starting with the (rational) head, moving to the (instinctual) gut, and ending with the (emotional) heart. Electronics performed and recorded by Mitchell Keaney in Brooklyn, New York between October 2018 and September 2019. Poems recited and recorded by Inky Lee in Berlin, Germany. Artwork and LP design by James Roemer. Mastered by John Wiese. Available now: (see:
Gilgongo Records online shop, Discogs, eBay). Physical copies include download, Bandcamp purchases made in the US through the artist's Bandcamp will ship direct from Gilgongo! https://mitchellkeaney.bandcamp.com/album/head-gut-heart

Soft Shoulder 'Formerly On Fluorescent Paper' LP (GGGR-121)
Formerly on Fluorescent Paper delivers 14 jaunts culled from the artist’s tape soup collage of several generations’ worth of punk and no-wave adjacent music. Be it jagged, angular, short tracks… atonal layers in otherwise listener-friendly settings… repetitive string clang aside gurgling synth and flailing reed-bite… Soft Shoulder continues to be the primary vehicle for Fella’s take on songwriting, in whatever the loosely defined genre(s) may be. However, compared to Not The New One (an eclectic collection of various incarnations), Contextual Depreciation (performance and practice tapes from the current group) and the recent Copy Machine Fall Down 7” (an abstract, long-distance-collaboration) …Formerly On Fluorescent Paper finds Fella alone. Written and recorded in the fever-dream of late 2020. Mastered by John Dieterich. Available now: (see:
Gilgongo Records online shop, Discogs, eBay / Digital: iTunes, Bandcamp).

Sissy Spacek 'BMW' CD (GGGR-119)
A screeching smash of searing grit and demolished shock from the trio of Blankenship / Mumma / Wiese, which can be identified as a distinct subgroup within the Sissy Spacek discography, responsible for such carnage as Wreck (2013), Basement (2014), and Slow Move (2017). BMW stands as a sharp-edged monument in the trio’s advancing decay, culled from a session at Blankenship’s high-security Bronson studio and utilizing the equipment and environment that fueled sessions by LHD, White Gold, and The Cherry Point. Limited edition, partially metalized CD housed in a 6-panel digipack, featuring a series of detailed collages by Wiese. Available now: (see:

Soft Shoulder 'Copy Machine Fall Down' 7" (GGGR-120)
Compiled by James Fella in late 2020 using remotely recorded components: Side A features the current Phoenix-based line-up (Caleb Dailey, Josh Rodriguez) of the long running junk-kraut post-NO group offering a constructed and dubbed out single while the flip finds a much more far-our free/faux-improvised medley with members old and new, near and far: Paul Arambula (Chandails, Vegetable – Berlin), John Dieterich (Deerhoof – Albuquerque), Hiromi Inada (Nicfit, Free City Noise – Nagoya) Seth Kasselman (Warn Climate – Phoenix). Upcoming LP, ‘Formerly On Fluorescent Paper’ due May / June. Available now: (see:

Filthy Grin 'NOHI' LP (single sided lathe LP, stereo)
Gerald Biggs (Filthy Grin) and James Fella have a long history of intersection and collaboration. Biggs recorded much of Soft Shoulder’s output after their initial line-up dissolved (sometimes this would mean just James, other times – new versions of the group). Biggs appears in countless Soft Shoulder as lyric references, but every now and then pops up as a member (see: two tracks on the most recent LP, ‘Not The New One’). When Biggs first started releasing work as Filthy Grin, Fella would push the releases on anyone he could think to (see: ‘Mouth Feeling’). For a brief time, both played in live versions of infamous Arizona group Pigeon Religion. The duo released a 7" together in 2015 (a musique concrete approach to music made with metal objects, packaging tape and drum pieces clattering on actual concrete). Fella finally forced an incredible LP from Filthy Grin, ‘Saturn in the Mirror’, in 2018, carving out a document which included Fella’s favorite material from Biggs from over the years. …especially since leaving Arizona, many times a check-in through e-mail includes an audio track, field recording, something / anything. NOHI is a Fella edit / assemble of miscellaneous pieces from Filthy Grin, originally traded amidst long distance correspondence. Although perhaps not technically limited, NOHI is a high quality, singled sided stereo lathe-cut LP. This is not the standard snap, crackle and pop of lathes both modern and ancient, but an item that would easily be misclassified as a proper, pressed LP. The initial run is of just 10 copies, but as Biggs approves, subsequent batches are planned to follow. The price is high, but so is the cost – Biggs and Fella are walking away from this one at a break-even point. Please feel free to inquire on availability and reserving future copies!

Max Nordile 'Building a Better Void' LP (GGGR-108)
*Max Nordile (Preening, Violence Creeps, Uzi Rash, et al.) tosses Gilgongo 30 minutes of trudging, free-form sprawl that draws unassuming and collateral reference points (in the label’s mind) to a highly regarded catalog of outsiders that spans decades (Jandek, Little Howlin’ Wolf, Nihilist Spasm Band). It’s an honor to challenge any listener, with Building a Better Void. LP available NOW (see:
Gilgongo Records online shop, Discogs, eBay)
“Max Nordile has a patented collage method. In this day, I almost hate to say it’s perhaps a distinctly American sound, like squawks from the rubber room. Although, this is sharply not a conversation between "Mattie" and "Hattie" concerning the "Wooly Bully" and the desirability of developing dancing skills (with no attempt made to synthesize these divergent topics). What you’re listening to is a tangled mass, a phone call from a scribbled area code, herking and jerking its way off the map. It’s catchy, it’s bent. After it said so much to me, I returned to the record, and then again and again. “Thanks so much,” I said to it, like it is said in the divine hand of “Diligent Pores.” And once more I’m gripped into powerful clang at the intersection of joy, mystery & abrasion. It is mercurial; an icy slip wherein the listener is absolutely unable to get the balance or footing to stand upright for all of thirty minutes. Building a Better Void is a jittering slob but a true testimonial to the San Pablo blocks of trauma-cracked sidewalks of Ishmael Reed’s Blues City: Oakland, brawling and husky. I feel as though I “came to” inside this album, awakened from a black out mid-party – but whose? The details are lost to me now. I struggle to move but not to escape, like bearing witness to the stupid drunk deft hand of William Eggleston’s video phantasmagoria, Stranded in Canton, or hamming on quads ‘round the joyous, unhinged roller rink that is The Shaggs. I want to call Nordile a junkyard James Cameron of aural thrillers, epic in scope, but he’s a poltergeist in the back seat, whispering spookies, in a vehicle we call Rolling Thunder Revue No. II. New fires to replace the bad ones. Freed punk. Friendly spirits.” – Forest Juziak

SOFT SHOULDER 'Not The New One' LP (GGGR-117)
‘Not The New One’ delivers a dose of Soft Shoulder which is similar to 2017’s ‘Song and Intermissions’ LP: sharp bursts which reference no wave, free improvisation, abstract electronics and riot grrrl from various configurations of the group: this time around with members of Oakland’s NO BABIES, Montreal’s FILTHY GRIN, GAY KISS from Phoenix, Berlin’s PAUL ARAMBULA (Chandails, Vegetable), etc. Sandwiched between a new 7” and LP from early 2020, and a forthcoming 7” and LP in early 2021, ‘Not The New One’ ties up loose ends from the second half of the 2010’s. Recorded sporadically between 2015 – 2019 in various warehouses, practice spaces and bedrooms in the Phoenix area. LP available now: (see:

SISSY SPACEK & SMEGMA 'Ballast' LP - gatefold (GGGR-110)
Description: Ace Farren Ford, Dennis Duck, and Ju Suk Reet Meate (three original members) are joined by Rock ’N’ Roll Jackie (35 years in the band), John Wiese (approximately 10 years), and a cast of others form the current third phase Smegma. The personnel of this album consists of this line-up plus Charlie Mumma, a member of Sissy Spacek since 2008. The source material of “Ballast” was recorded at home and on the Los Angeles radio station Dublab, but what we hear is not exactly Smegma and Sissy Spacek performing together as a live group. Wiese’s production of the recording is a kind of un-doing of the live group playing, forging it into a new collage of sound. The title of the album, “Ballast”, refers to a weight on a ship which improves it’s stability, but it is also a term for an electrical component that regulates electricity so as to not destroy the other components. It’s double meaning fits between the cover art and the collage process which is constantly partitioning and interrupting the elements of sound. —Takuya Sakaguchi, from the liner notes.

JAMES FELLA + STEVE JANSEN + STEVE ZIMMERMAN "Full Names, Alphabetical Order (Title)" LP (Alien Summer / That's Cool)
Squealing reeds, fold-over electronics, amplified packaging tape and primitive percussion from the crowded aisles of Revolver Records (from: co-founder Steve Zimmerman, prolific writer and roamer Steve Jansen and Gilgongo Records' James Fella). Outer Bounds of Sound was a recurring Sunday night affair: in a blue moon, you might catch a few artists or groups playing songs ...but for the most part it was a unpredictable cast of “Who's Who” and “who is that?”, playing their own bizarre take on free jazz, dragging in rewired televisions repurposed as drone devices, ancient modular units or home-grown program-based playback systems. Gibberish descriptions for gibberish, but often times very honest performances from people you may have never seen before and may also never see again. Available from the
Gilgongo Records online shop.

JADE HELM "Days Gone" 7" (GGGR-106)
A follow-up to their debut 7", "Human Condition", which was released in late 2017 - also on Gilgongo. Two songs from the same sessions, this record picks up where the previous one left off, so here's what was shared the first time around: Jackie Cruz has been recording, booking and playing shows throughout the Phoenix area, doing DJ nights and touring for over a decade. …but this 7” release for one of her current groups, Jade Helm, marks her criminally delayed first appearance on any vinyl format. Her song writing often gives nods to the influences of her youth, as apparent or transparent as they may or may not be, and on “Human Condition”, the music is allowed to expand and sprawl with more post-punk and even pop sensibilities while still allowing Jackie’s raw writing form (punk, 90’s indie and riot grrrl) to shine through. In these early recordings, initially constructed in a “solo” context, Jackie is joined by Matt Dobbins on bass (Rumspringer, Detached Objects), Alex Aguilar on guitar (his first time playing in a group, naturally accentuating these melodies), and Danny Levie on drums (who also assisted with the recording and runs Phoenix venue, The Lunchbox). Available from the
Gilgongo Records online shop.

***Please note that while this record is now technically available, Gilgongo will continue to donate money from all label copies to Jacke Cruz (Jade Helm), who is currently wrapping up her initial fight against cancer. So far Gilgongo has donated about $750. There's a few way to do this: you can donate using a
"friends/family" payment through PayPal: ...you can also just buy the record from the Gilgongo shop like normal - though there's a little bit of money lost in fees when you do it that way. In any case, batches were being sent over to her GoFundMe periodically as money came in - now it will just go directly to her. Thank you to people who have been kind and generous enough to donate significantly more than anyone would ask a stranger to. She appreciates the support so much and it is helping her through an unimaginably difficult time considering this is happening alongside Covid-19.

PAUL ARAMBULA "Submarine, Walk Thru This World With Me" 7" & CD
Although he has lived in Berlin for most of the past decade, Paul Arambula has always been close-by on the localized level of Gilgongo Records. Living in Arizona, it would have been impossible to not find Paul: From his “legendary if you caught them as the opener for your band’s Phoenix tour date” group The Chandails (who had a raw pop sound that could draw comparisons to both The Clean and Velvet Underground, to eclectic post-punk trios Vegetable (who had a 7” on the label clear back in 2010) and Mall, as permanent satellite member of the band Soft Shoulder. Paul’s solo output has ranged from primitive guitar to noise-assault poetry, and this release finds him in a variety of contexts over the course of a 7” and CD.

The 7” features two versions of the song ‘Submarine’, the “proper” of which finds influence in both “guitar” and glam as well as Half Japanese, and the “less proper” rendition, a 19 second sketch track from many years ago: recorded for a short-song project when he was (soon to be) 19 years old. The CD features the first edition of what is intended to function as a “radio show”.... A sprawling, hour-long collage of Robert Wyatt style keyboard-songs, field recordings and spoken word which function as a journal of observation and reinterpretation. Available from the
Gilgongo Records online shop.

SANDY EWEN "You Win" LP (GGGR-099)
While it’s relatively easy to refer to Sandy Ewen’s use of guitar as unconventional or abstract, the true nature of her work is much more exploratory in nature. Without relying on the use of effects or looping, the instrument itself functions as a canvas for Ewen’s ever-evolving arsenal of objects and ever-expanding techniques. Ewen has collaborated and performed with everyone from Henry Kaiser to Roscoe Mitchell, from Jaap Blonk to Lydia Lunch, from Keith Rowe to Tamio Shiraishi, from Damon Smith to Id M Theft Able, from To Carter to Weasel Walter, the list feels endless. Ewen’s drive to create and perform is rivaled by few, and a healthy body of releases documents much of her work in both solo and group settings. However, “You Win”, represents her first solo appearance on the full length, vinyl format. Availavle from the
Gilgongo Records online shop.

Ewen has created a series of videos that coincide with this LP:

SOFT SHOULDER "Contextual Depreciation" LP (GGGR-104)

Two months after the recent ‘Aerosol Can Stand’ 7”, James Fella’s long-running group Soft Shoulder returns with 10 tracks recorded throughout 2018-2019 at various live performances, at their practice space and in some cases, fragments of both settings collaged together at home. While not providing definitive versions of any new “songs”, Contextual Depreciation appears as a mile marker for the group’s approach in the late 2010s: jagged post punk, slow-churning junk-kraut from the Sonoran desert. Available from
Gilgongo Records and on Bandcamp.

01/10/20:

SOFT SHOULDER "Aerosol Can Stand" 7" (GGGR-107)
Aerosol Can Stand finds JAMES FELLA's long running “post-punk / no-wave / junk-kraut” group in a rare moment of pop sensibility (subject to objection and critique). Recorded spur-of-the-moment during practice, these two songs are a snapshot of Soft Shoulder as a trio (with JOSH RODRIGUEZ (Mallevs, Sleep Money, etc) and Moone Records’ CALEB DAILEY) in late 2019.

However, the same variety of haphazard approaches and bedroom-style recording methods which Fella is accustomed to using when processing songs alone were utilized here with the full band. Everything captured on the second take: microphones taped to broken pieces of drum kit hardware and whatever else was sitting around on the floor, overblown overdubs done with a faulty reverb unit, synth later dropped in as an afterthought directly before a maniacal full-volume mix-down in the same rehearsal space later that week. Comparisons aside and credit due as collateral: RIYL The Fall, The Homosexuals, etc. Edition of 600 (includes download and every copy comes with a unique print made using components from the artwork). Available from
Gilgongo Records and on Bandcamp.

TERMINAL 11 "'Slowly Advancing Minidisc Exorcism" LP *single-sided stereo HQ lathe (GGGR-105)
"Slowly Advancing Minidisc Exorcism was originally released in digital format by Sibilants in 2018 and is now released as a 25 edition stereo lathe by Gilgongo. The cover is the original artwork for the digital release and inside you’ll find the lathe, a variant print of the cover specific to your copy, and a print showing all 25 variant covers.

Having an emotional attachment to the sounds sourced in my music has been a consistent theme since I started experimenting in 1999. These samples act as bookmarks for points in my life, good and bad, that are meaningful to me. During my youth I recorded these moments on minidisc from 2001-2006, without any solid plan for what I would make with them. This resulted in 50 mostly unlabeled minidiscs. When Sibilants asked me to produce a piece of music for them last year, I decided it was time to sort through them and use whatever sessions sparked the most memory for me. Contained within this music is a trip to the casino with friends, a zither my Aunt Lois gave me that she originally found in a dumpster, various sounds sourced from old jobs, a grandfather clock, chopped cilantro, cicadas, wind chimes, my Aunt Rita whipping breakfast eggs, several drum sets, many of the breaths taken while continuing to do all of this, and the mechanics of the recorder itself that interrupt most of these sessions, due to the microphone being attached incorrectly. The whole process of creating this was therapeutic for me, and I hope you enjoy listening to this slice of my life." - Michael Castaneda (Terminal 11) 2019

TASHI DORJI & JOHN DIETERICH "Midden" LP (GGGR-102) *co-released with Moone Records.
"While the hypothetical range of what the listener might expect from a record of free-improvised guitar playing is understandably gigantic, it’s not very often that what is heard so easily navigates across such a vast terrain. In their most often observed environments (Dorji’s relentlessly frequent solo and collaborative releases, Dieterich in the untamable and uniquely enchanting Deerhoof), both artists regularly redefine both themselves and what “guitar” playing may or may not be.

On “Midden”, there is communication and expression that transcends the notion that two people can simply cross paths and play guitar together. Plenty of people do this, but few intersect so naturally and comfortably in this abstract of a context. While captured in the live setting, Midden is not the result of weeks of touring, fine tuning ideas and patterns. Instead, the LP is merely a document which archives the final of three chance meetings, in which two people engage in a natural dialog that at times is jagged and jarring while at others is mesmerizing and beautiful. Unpredictable yet completely organic, such a language is a joy to hear." *available to wholesale from Revolver / Midheaven, Fantastique, The Business and direct.

WAXY TOMB "Imminent Fold" LP w/ art booklet (GGGR-096)
LP includes a 25 page full-color art booklet. Amorphous and perplexing, Jules Litman-Cleper’s work as Waxy Tomb can incidentally incite a notion of chaos or randomness in the foreground while expressing a series of distilled dialogs that are best understood while digesting the project as a whole. On a surface level, “Imminent Fold” may seem like a playful exhibition of alien commentary – guided by colliding textures and electronic anomalies. This material, in conjunction with her visuals, functions as a field report on the intrusion of industrial and urban landscapes and digital processes on the fabric weaved by natural structure.

Jules Litman-Cleper is a Bay Area native and has been offering multi-media performances and releasing work under the Waxy Tomb guise since 2011. “Imminent Fold” is the first appearance on the LP format and is a 40 minute dive into this petri dish, with a high-quality book of imagery created as an equally important visual accompaniment to the record.
RIYL: the place that is slightly further out than the most left field releases from the early years of Rough Trade, Subterranean or Mute, while finding sporadic comradery with the likes of Laurie Anderson, Metalux and Inflatable Boy Clams. *available to wholesale from Revolver / Midheaven, Fantastique and direct.

JOHN COLLINS MCCORMICK "Ad for Nails" LP (GGGR-098)
The work of John Collins McCormick straddles sculpture and music by using sound as material to highlight the ability of sound to change scale through visual and sonic rhythms and textures. What is heard is generated by small objects, percussion and electronics - interactions occurring in the realm of art and noise: a McCormick performance may consist of repurposed motors, clutter jostling on exposed speakers or something familiar from your office rolling across floor in an unfamiliar way.

Ad For Nails functions as a sort of audio diary, finding these types of sounds woven between field recordings, captured conversation and old-fashioned drum kit. McCormick’s LP offers a peak into his sonic world and how these pieces of it may be heard (including the types of moments in which we instinctively feel there may be nothing to hear at all). *available to wholesale from Revolver / Midheaven, Fantastique and direct.

IS IN UNSAMBLE "Is the Belly / In the Belly" LP (GGGR-094)
Available Friday 2/8/19! "Is the Belly / In the Belly" LP Ju Suk Reet Meate & Oblivia (Smegma, The Tenses), Brenna Murphy & Birch Cooper (MSHR), Chiara Giovando (Harrius), Johannes Lund & Tobias Kirstein are the IS IN UNSAMBLE.

Is the Belly / In the Belly: an old fashioned “jam session” with a deep but distant, natural room sound. Fluttering alto sax and calm, staccato trumpet slowly find their way: spelunking towards a center in which the organ / voice / homemade synth / radio / percussion blend and find their way back to the nervous outer world. They converge with strange but riveting vocals, slide guitar and record skips—mingled with the sounds of dinosaurs canoodling. Song forms rise and fall back against the river-like surface tension: a roaring tale is told, then slowly fades away to nothingness. The jacket art is a collaboration between Ju Suk’s squiggly line drawings and lines / angles / photocopy artifacts and lettering from James Fella. Recorded September 2015 at Smegma’s Studio in Portland.

Aurelius, James Fella, etc.) as a sound engineer, in live performances, and through sound design. "Saturn In The Mirror" collects two long appreciated pieces from many, many years ago, compiled as an LP to be shared with all. LP design and concept by JS Aurelius. Collage by Gerald Biggs. Outside of the record store, a fire pit is constructed so that Pigeon Religion can burn copies of their recent 7" in honor of Record Store Day. Inside, James Fella and Steve Jansen have their "instruments" strewn throughout the middle of the room and offer a less-conventional in-store performance than ones which would be seen in most other shops throughout that day. DREW DANIEL & JOHN WIESE - "Continuous Hole" LP (GGGR-091)
Gilgongo Records is pleased to announce “Continuous Hole”, a collaborative album by
Drew Daniel and John Wiese. The fruit of over ten years of home recordings in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Baltimore, “Continuous Hole” melds improvisation and musique concrète composition into a uniquely sweaty document of labor-intensive rhythm. A finger puzzle of reconciled opposites: lockstep structure and constant flux. Many of the tracks reflect the unique blending of the disparate backgrounds of its creators: on “Abhorred Shears”, “Sleek Disorder” and “Cosmic Joke” the relentlessly variable source material is relegated to precisely timed gated forms and patterns. Without using any sampling or MIDI sequencing, the rhythmic cuts evoke the tempo/BPM of footwork, juke or gabber, but they are constructed entirely from volcanic, gnarled abstraction, and eschew typical genre elements.

“Progress Bar” goes from frantic cuts to weightless slo-mo freefall and back to frenzy. Moving from mayhem to menace, “Surprise” concludes the album with ominous flutters of a pedal steel guitar and the sound of a dog’s toenails scraping a stone floor. In the final milliseconds of the song, the dog leaps for the listener’s throat. Raw yet precise, it’s a dynamic conclusion to an album of strong contrasts from two American artists discovering common ground in the joy of frenzied cutting. A prolific recording artist and visual artist with an extensive discography under his own name, and with grindcore stalwarts Sissy Spacek, John Wiese is currently based in Cleveland. One half of the electronic band Matmos and all of The Soft Pink Truth, Drew Daniel is based in Baltimore.

The album was mastered by Thomas Dimuzio. The cover photograph was shot by John Wiese in Drew Daniel’s office on the campus of Johns Hopkins University where Daniel is a Shakespeare professor. Videos for album tracks are slated from John Wiese, Max Eilbacher, Robert Beatty, Luke Fischbeck, and M.C. Schmidt. Summer concerts in support of the album are currently being planned.

10/26/17

Two new releases available to order now (both will be shipping in mid-November):

JADE HELM - "Human Condition" 7" (GGGR-092)
Jackie Cruz has been recording, booking and playing shows throughout the Phoenix area, doing DJ nights and touring for over a decade. Order:
HERE. Listen: HERE.

DETACHED OBJECTS - "Dirt Birth" 12" (GGGR-088)
Originally released on cassette for a May 2016 West Coast tour, “Dirt Birth” was recorded to tape at the group’s practice space in Tempe, AZ and captures Detached Objects at a raw and explosive period of time: a mix of intricate guitar-heavy garage, potentially “loose” pop-punk and legitimately reckless grunge.
While the status of the band is currently up in the air, and may be for the indefinite future, “Dirt Birth” is a document of dragging oneself forward through a difficult moment and seeing what would happen next, and it reappears now in the form of a short-run, hand-assembled 12”. Related groups: Rumspringer, Soft Shoulder, Parkway Wretch, Robot Repair. Order:
HERE. Listen: HERE.

09/04/17
Available to order now, a new LP from
John Wiese. The official release date is 9/20/17, the same date he begings a US tour supporting Zola Jesus: dates here.

JOHN WIESE - "Escaped Language" LP (GGGR-093)
Recorded during Ina/GRM's 2016 Présences Électronique Festival in Paris, John Wiese's Escaped Language is a concise and calculated piece which slowly evolved in various settings over a number of years. While 2015's Deviate From Balance double-LP was expansive and chronicled performances and works employing many other musicians, here, Wiese dissects and reassembles portions of his vocabulary alone. Simultaneously dense and sparse, delicate and abrasive, free and tactical, the resulting recording stands as a substantial document of his approach to sound, twenty-five years into his prolific tenure.

Available for purchase from the
Gilgongo-label-only online shop or Discogs (where the full Gilgongo mail-order / distro now resides)
Stores: available from Revolver USA and Forced Exposure.

Three new LPs available late July on GILGONGO RECORDS:

SOFT SHOULDER - "Songs and Intermissions" LP / iTunes(GGGR-090)
Disjointed no-wave, monotonous post-punk, a couple of songs that come as close to “pop” as possible and a handful of intermissions throughout: the new LP from
Soft Shoulder collects tracks from 2009-2015. While the group is now on its 19th line-up, most recordings have historically been James Fella, solo. This continues to be the case here (with most tracking done at Gilgongo Records HQ and defunct Phoenix warehouse, Sound Kontrol), but there are collaborations with many regular members of the “live group”(s) and also a track which builds on a Silver Apples recording created by Simeon in 1998 while adding synth to a percussion session from 1968. Edition of 550, includes download and a double sided 11x17 photocopy collage insert with track information and fliers. Also available to stream or purchase from Bandcamp.

OLIVIA NEUTRON-JOHN - "INJURY TRAIN AND I'M NEVER GETTING OFF IT b/w VULNERABILITY" LP / iTunes (GGGR-064) *3rd edition.
Finally available again with new cover art and now packaged in a proper, high-gloss, jacket! ***original description: "RAW, GLITTERING, PSYCHEDELIC ... OLIVIA NEUTRON-JOHN, is a NON-BINARY, POST-BRO one person music/dance declaration of war on the accepted and the expected. The

The grooves barely fit on the album even … this is a record unlike any other. In an era when groups are formalistic recitations of previous groups, loathe to show any personality, innovation, or opinion – for fear of jeopardizing a future career in sales or politics – OLIVIA NEUTRON-JOHN is a vital bolt from the blue, a radical arrival which signals something outside of noise, punk, disco, pop …Appearing fully formed, without a note or groove out of place, the O N-J record is a total statement; something brand new, a strike against complacency, a challenge thrown at the content-less stagnation of modern indie, garage, and whatever other tiresome genre exercises are being paraded around at the corporate festivals. Combining two cassette only releases by O N-J, (INJURY TRAIN AND I'M NEVER GETTING OFF IT & VULNERABILITY), O N-J's debut vinyl album captures the intensity of the same live performance that's transfixing audiences coast to coast. SOFT SHOULDER - "Repeat #4 aka Desert Plants and Scooter in Carport" LP/ iTunes (Alien Summer)
40 minutes of junk-kraut offered as two side-long tracks from Arizona’s
Soft Shoulder. “Warbled Practice” catches the group as a trio: working on the basic structure of a new song in a Tempe warehouse, recorded direct to malfunctioning cassette deck. “Large Group in Close Quarters” was recorded live December 2016: a one-time 8-piece line-up playing a scattered tape-noise, reed-squeal, triple-bass rendition of the same song (which had already arrived at home as a single sided test press) featuring members of Warm Climate, Sleep Money, Sunn Trio, Humiliation, Chandails and Waytansea Point. Also available to stream or purchase from Bandcamp.

04/07/17:

TANNER GARZA - "For Groucho Marx" 7" lathe (GGGR-089)
Tanner Garza is from TX and has quietly unleashed a massive amount of material over the past 5 years (both as a member of Black Leather Jesus, but also on his own and on releases with Waves Crashing Piano Chords, AMK, Jay Howard, Andrew Coltrane and many more). Here, Tanner offers two short tape collages, one more serene and the other somewhat haunting despite still remaining somewhat calm and ambient. Hear "Grouch Bag" and see a video for "Three Days After".

JAMES FELLA - "Inactive Parts" LP+digital / "Inactive Parts and Portion" CD / iTunes (Weird Machine)
Available 02/01/17. About: "Inactive Parts" was a December 2014 installation at The Trunk Space in Phoenix, AZ consisting of paintings, screen printed xerox pieces, lathe cut 7" records and two sets of two single-sided acetate LPs which used for a sound installation that could also function has "instruments" for a live performance. Two performances occurred: 12/05/14 (the opening reception, duration: 4 hours), 12/20/14 (for the Gilgongo Records 10 year anniversary event with Sissy Spacek, Stephen Steinbrink, Cherie Cherie and Maniac Cop (Mallevs), duration: approx. 30 minutes). The majority of "Inactive Parts" consists of quiet, acoustic sound being played back at significantly amplified volumes (with some portions of tape collage using material from various tape recordings circa 2005-2008).

"Inactive Parts" as a title is a reference to the standard time in which metal plates for pressing records are discarded if the customer does not repress or make arrangements for the plates to be shipped. The irony in this standard is that at the time of the finalized edit of this release, the typical turn time for an LP was more than 6 months from start to finish. As a person who's primary role in "music" is releasing records, this conflict in fine print and reality was mildly amusing, though it created an environment which had become problematic to the point that many peers who run labels were calling it quits. “Inactive Parts” originally appeared as “New Material”, an hour long piece which aired on Ricardo Wang’s “What’s This Called?” on KPSU in Portland, OR in August 2014. The content of that program, the acetate version and this final edition are all slightly different from one another. Digital version of LP edition on
Bandcamp.

"
Strong Output Near Saturation: James Fella: Solo Recordings", is a very in-depth review and collection of thoughts from John Collins McCormick regarding 4 long-format solo releases: Expanding Gap, See Tall Palm, Weak Left Input and Slots (etc) which were released on Gilgongo and Gilgongo sub-labels.

11/01/16:

MIA LOUCKS - "Sister Honey Demos" LP (GGGR-084)

“Bedroom music” as a genre is perhaps questionable, and yet when first hearing the cassette that these songs were originally released on, this was the thought that I was fixated on. Mia’s music can be easily referred to as pretty or “a little angsty”, or simple and sweet, or “a little early Cat Power or Liz Phair” …but there is a rudimentary nature embedded in these songs that, for me, transcends any given era and makes them feel all the more legitimate. It’s the contrast of harmony with the grittiness of “lo-fi” that strikes a chord and drew me in. All the more compelling to me was the fact that she was truly a “bedroom” musician. Mia was not sending e-mails to labels trying to get someone to put a record out for her; she wasn’t even playing shows or sharing her music publicly. She had given some recordings to a childhood friend of her sister, and they were moved by them as such that they and their husband released the cassette on their label, Related Records. Releasing records for artists and groups is interesting because the judgement to do so can be clouded by many external factors (many of which are completely understandable and usually somehow relate to finances). …of course: it’s not feasible to press records of every single small thing that you come across and enjoy, but every now and then, Gilgongo has allowed me to try and share truly obscure material, even on the macro level of “sub-culture” or “independent music”, releases that mattered to me enough to go through the motions of making them physical and available to the outside world as best as I can. Mia’s LP is a perfect example of why I enjoy releasing records - James Fella, November 2016

AH FUCK / RUSH AWESOME - split cassette.
Brothers Willie and Daryl Gussin deliver material which arrives from polar opposite ends of the spectrum. While Willie (Rush Awesome) offers a more reserved and spacious / ambient piece (think Fripp by way of Rafeal Toral in his more minimal moments), Daryl's (Ah Fuck) side is a reckless session that covers as much left-field ground as possible over the course of 10 minutes (from found-sound collage to Dead C / self-destructive guitar work to disjointed Jandek-eque / truly free-form singer song-dismantler). Co-released by Gilgongo and both artists. Hear:

02/01/16:

Three recent full length CDs from James Fella on various Gilgongo sub-labels. All three are also available digitally on
Bandcamp.

JAMES FELLA - "Expanding Gap" CD (Weird Machine)
About: Edited in late 2015, "Expanding Gap" is an extremely dense sound collage utilizing roughly 4 hours of material originally hosted on the blog "Giveaway Pile" (2010-2012), which featured daily writing or recordings by artist James Fella. Some of this material was released as a boxset which included a lathe-cut LP and two 90 minute cassette tapes (also entitled "Giveaway Pile"). Here, this work has been reduced and layered to a degree that in theory should be overwhelming, but it instead flows and breathes somewhat freely. Stream the entire release:
YOUTUBE.

JAMES FELLA - "See Tall Palm" CD (Deliberate Indifference)
About: Recorded in October 2015, "See Tall Palm" was intended to be material which would be ideal for sleeping to when listened to at a lower volume, while also being a more unnerving and abrasive listen when projected at a higher volume. Listened to quietly, "See Tall Palm" is a slow moving, swirling low-end drone that seems somewhat sedate. In actuality, and more apparent when shared in a forceful manner, "See Tall Palm" is a constantly changing, pulsing, textured sort of release whose shifting and overlapping details cascade from side to side as time goes on. Stream the entire release:
YOUTUBE.

JAMES FELLA - "Trellis" CD (Alien Summer)
About: Also recorded in October 2015, "Trellis" is unintentionally the antithesis of "See Tall Palm". Instead of overblown electronics and an arguably impenetrable flow, "Trellis" is reserved and often sparse, comprised entirely of acoustic sound: non-amplified electric guitar, cymbals and the physical sound of contact with recording devices to their surfaces when not restrained and limited to close proximity. Devoid of any narrative, the listener is free to regard (or disregard) whatever the response may be to changes in the environment. While in "See Tall Palm" this is gradual, in "Trellis" it is more eventual: the guitar offers momentary fluctuation from a softer almost Shruti box style Indian drone to a very much self-limited and self-destructive attempt at becoming something more fierce before returning to its initial state (again and again). It can be difficult to try and sort out what any recorded work is trying to tell you, and truth be told it may be not be saying at all. Perhaps the artist just needed to get something out of their system, and it was just entirely too late to be audible enough to make contact with the outside world.

01/01/16:

SOFT SHOULDER - "Collection Volume One" CD (GGGR-087)
Call it "no wave", "post-punk", whatever you prefer... Soft Shoulder have recently hit the 10 year mark and (as more eloquently put in a recent review on
THE QUIETUS), the band will not be going anywhere anytime soon. A consistently inconsistent group that will be present for a moment and then gone a day or two later, whatever the reason may be, yet with somewhat regular output (especially over these past few years). "Collection Volume One" compiles the recent "No Draw" LP with material from seven 7" records and a couple of cassettes, 32 songs on 18 tracks in just about 80 minutes. Also available digitally on iTunes / Amazon / etc. Stream through the entire release, here: YOUTUBE.
Wholesale: Revolver USA, CTD, direct.

11/04/15:

PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT - "Eleventh Hour" LP (GGGR-081)
Originally released as a tour cassette on Monorail Trespassing, “Eleventh Hour” features two side-long tracks that serve as excellent examples of the diverse sounds Pedestrian Deposit use to construct their work. There are moments of somber melody, near silence, electro-acoustic assembly, drone and harsh noise. The material is dynamic and extreme, at time in regards to restraint and at others in terms of volume and catharsis. Previous releases on Hospital, Hanson and A Dear Girl Called Wendy. Edition of 300 in screened jackets.
Wholesale: Forced Exposure, Revolver USA, CTD, direct.

SOFT SHOULDER - "No Draw" LP (GGGR-080)
2016 marks 10 years of Arizona’s Soft Shoulder. In that time they have released a plethora of 7”s and sporadic cassettes, CDrs and lathe cut recordings on labels such as Isolated Now Waves, Not Not Fun and Gilgongo. With a line-up that frequently changes, and many recordings which are just James Fella on all instruments, the “band” changes trajectory in a very spastic nature, but usually remains on the no-wave / post-punk axis. The A-side of “No Draw” is Soft Shoulder at its most accessible, while the B-side, “Repeat #3” is very minimal and monotonous (a largely improvised stomp with Ricky and Sean of Oakland’s No Babies). Trace ingredients (less than 1%): Mars, Frumpies, U.S. Maple, A Frames, etc.

SMEGMA & WINTERS IN OSAKA - "Sonic Transgressions" LP (GGGR-083)
Collaboration between the legendary Smegma and Chicago's Winters in Osaka. Edition of only 250 copies: full color jackets, heavy vinyl and with download included. Split release with End Tyme (UK), Witch Sermon, Nefarious Activities, Plaques and Blunt Force.
Wholesale: Revolver USA

SHEARING PINX - "Poison Hands" LP (GGGR-072)
On vinyl for the first time, the 2006 debut full length from Vancouver’s SHEARING PINX, “Poison Hands”, was originally released as a 2x3" CDr on Not Not Fun and CD on Gilgongo. This collection of songs still sounds fresh, with aspects of Unwound, Huggy Bear, Sleetmute Nightmute and Sonic Youth – the material is abrasive and challenging but at the same time, not really all that rough on the ears (if you’ve trained them well enough).

Wholesale: Revolver USA, CTD, direct.

BUTTER KNIFES / SOFT SHOULDER - split 7" (GGGR-078)
Butter Knifes is one of several projects from the mind of 13 year old Harrison Hufman, who for the past couple of years has been playing shows around the Phoenix area and releasing a steady stream of oddball bedroom music ranging from Daniel Johnston influenced songs to no wave / atonal outbursts (as heard on this record). Writing and recording his material independently, the Butter Knifes tracks were the result of experimenting with a broken electric guitar and quite literally a couple of butter knives. On the flip side, Soft Shoulder covers Fathers Day, another Phoenix band who for 11 years have released thrash/punk under the guise / various line-ups of fake "dad" characters and happen to also be a Harrison-favorite. The song originally appeared on a compilation consisting of nothing but bands covering the same Fathers Day song. While the original was 30 seconds or so, Soft Shoulder dragged it out for over 5 minutes (confronting absurdity with annoyance and reckless repetition). Edition of 300 on white vinyl.

JOHN WIESE - "Deviate From Balance" CD (GGGR-077)
John Wiese’s long awaited Deviate From Balance is the artist’s first album since 2011’s Seven Of Wands (PAN). Recorded throughout Europe/UK, Australia, and the US, the album includes scored ensemble pieces including over 20 musicians on each, recorded in Melbourne and Portland, as well as audio documentation of installation pieces Wind Changed Direction, a four-channel sound piece presented in the garden of the Getty Center (curated by Liars), and Battery Instruments, an eight-channel piece presented at HSP in New Zealand, now heard for the first time. Also included are various collaborations and recordings from live performances.
At over 80 minutes, Deviate From Balance has been packaged as a 2×LP and CD both with tip-on gatefold jackets. Musicians appearing include Joseph Hammer, Ikue Mori, Evan Parker, C Spencer Yeh, Joe Preston, Smegma and countless more. The material is extremely diverse and services as a comprehensive and detailed document of this prolific individuals work over the past several years.

JAMES FELLA + FILTHY GRIN 7" (GGGR-073)

The empty room, like the rest of the house, had a concrete floor. Littered with miscellaneous pieces of wood, random bicycle parts and unidentified metal objects, the room itself was essentially the instrument of choice. Cables ran under the door and through the air conditioning vents. Of all of the times that I had recorded various things with Gerald Biggs at YOBS, this was by far the most unorganized, but ultimately the most organic and cathartic. Looking back on this now, I see direct parallels to the arrangement of what he captured that evening to the visual work he has been assembling since moving away from Arizona. He is an architect of circumstance and surrounding who is, intentionally or otherwise, reacting and communicating. It was, perhaps, a very strange time for both of us, manifesting in what would look like some kind of insane ritual to the outside world, and I’m extremely grateful that this small little record exists as a document of it. – James Fella 5/1/15
Wholesale: Revolver USA, CTD, direct.

Also available now, three new 7"s from Soft Shoulder. Hear all three:
https://softshoulder.bandcamp.com:
"Stair" (Weird Machine). "This is a mess of a record... each song tumbles into the next, tossing around mid-paced art-punk / no wave / post-punk punctuated by basic cavernous drumming and skronky hardly tuned guitars. They even through in a saxophone and make that shit work. There are traces of Dog Faced Hermans, Caroliner and Sun City Girls, but they keep it short and urgent throughout. Great Record" - Maximum Rocknroll.

"Fabric" (Alien Summer). Originally released on a cassette compilation from Phoenix label Tagobella, Yellow Green Red says Fabric is "chugging along like Black Time or Tyvek trying out for a Troubleman Unlimited contract", with the flip-side sounding like "a paper-thin A Frames". Add a dose of early Chromatics or Monorchid for good measure, with hints of tape collage and free jazz simmering in the mix. Active to various degrees and in different capacities since 2006, this is one of three new Soft Shoulder 7"s in 2015, with an LP on Gilgongo to follow.

"Von Guts" (Deliberate Indifference). The A-side of "Von Guts" was originally released in July 2011 as a C-5 cassette on Effeminate by Anna Nasty (Olivia Neutron-John, Chain & the Gang). Raw and junky no-wave punk with lyrics borrowed from the late Kurt Vonnegut, with the flip-side featuring radical remixes of the entire release. Damaged music on both sides. Tiny Mix-Tapes: "When SS mash that “Von Guts”-proper riff into the ground like fish brains it’s like a pendant going back and forth in front of your eyes, hypnotizing you, leaving you ready to perform whatever task Fella asks of you. Don’t drink that Kool-Aid, friend."

GILGONGO RADIO - GILGONGO RECORDS 2014 RECAP by James Fella / Gilgongo Records on Mixcloud

Happy New Year! Here is a recap and sampling of most of what was released on Gilgongo Records in 2014, with a few selections from upcoming / early 2015 records as well. Some are played straight through, some are just excerpts, some are layered on top of others, etc. I don't usually timestamp the mixes because of how much actual mixing there is, but for the sake of making it a bit more easier than normal to figure out what something was - I'm trying it out for this one.

2014 was a really abnormal year for the label, with a lot of releases from bands here in Arizona (where I have been living since 1999), and as well in regards to quantity. There is already an unhealthy back-log of new things coming out in 2015, and it will surely be a continuation of Gilgongo's left-of-center (most the time) and painfully inconsistent, stream-of-consciousness genre jumping. Hold on!

12/18/14:

December 2014 marks 10 years for Gilgongo Records. To celebrate, we're having a show at The Trunkspace in Phoenix, AZ - feautring artists from the state of have releases on the label (Stephen Steinbrink, Mallevs, Cherie Cherie and James Fella). Sissy Spacek will also be coming out from LA to play this event. The Facebook page for this is here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/688897894542828/

The Phoenix New Times was kind enough to write a very nice piece about the label in regards to our 10 year anniversary as well. See it here:
http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2014/12/gilgongo_james_fella_tempe.php

Thank you so much to all of those who have supported Gilgongo over the years. We're not going anywhere and 2015 is already looking to be just as hectic and busy as 2014 has been.

CHERIE CHERIE - "Share" LP (GGGR-075)
The Arizona desert heat melts the more heavy moments of Mazzy Star down into a warm bath of 60’s psych and folk, shoegaze in a pure and accidental form. The folks from Cherie Cherie have been staples of Phoenix music for years (Rum Tenor, Tierra Del Fuego, Monophonic Hillside) and have collaborated (Lonna Kelley) with Howe Gelb and Giant Sand, and the songs on here are beautifully raw, fresh and timeless. Modestly released by the band themselves in a hand-made edition of just 100, this record disappeared in a matter of months. Now back in an edition of 300, fully packaged and ready to be indulged. RIYL: Velvet Underground, Jesus and Mary Chain, Low. See a video for one of the songs:

PIGEON RELIGION - "Warm Insides" 7" (GGGR-068)
The final recorded output from Arizona’s Pigeon Religion. Two tracks that let relentless lethargy shine in that No Trend and Flipper kind of way, smoothed over with disjointed sound collage, clocking in at just over 11 minutes. Originally released as a cassette in a criminally short run of 60 copies, “Warm Insides” was recorded at YOBS in Tempe, AZ by Gerald Biggs. Since then, members have moved on to from the ASCETIC HOUSE collective, industrial/ritual cult unit MARSHSTEPPER and have joined the recently revamped DESTRUCTION UNIT.

VIAL OF SOUND - "God's Oscillator" 12" (GGGR-069).
Vinyl version of the 2nd Vial of Sound release. Recorded / produced by Future Days (David Scott Stone and Matt Thornley), mastered by Bob Weston. From AMDISCS (who have coordinated the digital release): Vial of Sound are back with more of their signature immaculately constructed and gorgeously gleaming cosmic disco, now for AMDISCS: Futures Reserves Label. Made on period analogue synthesisers fresh from the seventies and eighties, God’s Oscillator is as lovingly detailed in evoking New York and Italian dancefloors of the era as it is outrageously funky. Diamonds synth hooks and disco-ball planets glide smoothly past with electric charisma, while mournful vocoder melodies soar beatifically overhead. It’s music for Lamborghinis and rocketships, tearing up the Saturnian riviera at twilight. Seems God is a DJ in white satin and rhinestones.

SOFT SHOULDER – “People Problems” 7” (GGGR-035) repress.
Out of print since 2011, we made an additional 200 copies.

06/01/13:

COLORGUARD – “Host” 7” lathe (GGGR-056)
One-sided 7” lathe cut. Excellent, beautiful sound art / clatter from Kryssi Battalene. Extremely limited, order now. Hear the entire record here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWwmgxWfMeE

04/22/13:

SOFT SHOULDER – “Repeat #2” 7” lathe (GGGR-055)
One-sided 7” lathe cut. On this record Soft Shoulder is James Fella only. Active since 2005, the group has seen many different line-ups and has released a sporadic series of records on Gilgongo, Not Not Fun, Isolated Now Waves, etc. Rather than offering short and jagged pieces of overblown no-wave, “Repeat #2” is a long, monotonous 7 minute mess. In a way, there are elements of dub and krautrock, but realistically it’s just raw and stripped down repetitive punk. Hear the entire thing here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwGKmLfQ1gk

04/20/13:

BASEBALL CAP – “Laptop Musician” 7” lathe (GGGR-053)
Baseball Cap is a moniker of Christian Filardo who runs the label Holy Page. With this project, he is creating sound work that is roaming and textured using a tableful of pedals and often times no source sound other than an incomplete connection on the initial 1/4” cable. I personally find his output to be amongst the most organic of many peers. It is simple in its approach, but if you read between the lines of sputtering signals and tangled tones, there is plenty to walk away from on here. Listen here:

:

ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO – “Abraxasaxophonic Smooth Jazz Vagina” LP (GGGR-047)
Arrington de Dionyo (Old Time Relijun and Malaikat Dan Singa) offers a solid 20 minutes of abrasive and bizarre free form saxophone work over the distorted reception of a smooth jazz radio station. Confusing yet strangely honest feeling. The first half of the flip side features several short pieces recorded in the same era (some sounding like fragments of Old Time Relijun pieces, some more in-line with Arrington's solo work), with the second half pulled from his masterpiece, "Slow Dancin' Under the Moon Tonight", about which he said: "...was recorded sometime in 2010 using "Songsmith" software. It is one of the most unlistenable and abrasively grating albums ever made by Arrington de Dionyso". Enjoy! Hear:

ALSO AVAILABLE NOW:

(D)(B)(H) – “Masterpieces of Objective Reporting” LP (GGGR-054)
A full length LP featuring two side long cuts by this ever-changing ensemble. Pressed in an edition of 210 copies on thick vinyl. Cover art by John McCormick spray painted & screen printed onto recycled jackets, some brown and others white. Recorded in a 19th century log cabin in Southern Indiana, these recordings as a quartet showcase the group in their most patient and cohesive display to date... Eavesdropped upon as soft talkers finish each others sentences, a silhouette of sound passes through the room. Spittle and scrapes coalesce into a single vessel of subtlety as thin fingers course along your scalp. Slowly dragged - into and through an alien terrain in a dream state of heightened awareness. Small motors, distant whirling tones and a vibrating necklace; under the influence of being under the water. File under: lowercase, non-idiomatic improv, deep listening. Hear Side A:

SOFT SHOULDER / ORANGE COAX / NO BABIES / BUSY LIGHTS - 4 way split 7” (GGGR-052)
Long overdue four way split 7" from Arizona's SOFT SHOULDER, Denton, TX's ORANGE COAX and from CA, BUSY LIGHTS and NO BABIES - four groups of individuals who have been navigating the same circuits of over-blown art-tinged punk for years. Soft Shoulder has resurfaced in countless forms since 2005, on this recording featuring guest vocals from VEGETABLE's Anna Nasty. Orange Coax is a drums / sax / vocal trio that offer a chaotic but controlled take on X-Ray Spex sans electricity. Busy Lights recall an early 200's DC sound and No Babies continue on from the rampage of their LP on UPSET THE RHYTHM with a short spastic no-wave assault. Edition of 500 on clear, green, blue and black vinyl. Hear a strange mashed up commercial:
